Anti-Aging: Why do I need Retinol?

retinol

As we age our skin starts to lose its natural ability to renew itself, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and duller looking skin. There are many anti-aging skin care products available to help your skin to look smoother and younger. One of the most widely used products in anti-aging treatments is retinol.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It helps to prevent buildup of dead skin cells, promotes faster cell turn-over, and stimulates new collagen formation. This leads to a softer, more youthful look and feel. Although generally mild, retinol products can cause mild redness and skin flaking, so it is important to start by using it only twice a week and slowly increase to every other day and finally to every night.  Retinol also causes sun sensitivity, so it is important to apply your retinol only at night after you have washed and dried your face. Luckily, a little goes a long way and a pea-sized amount is plenty. (Just don't use it while you are pregnant or breast feeding!)

Anti-aging products with retinol help regenerate collagen to give you healthier, younger looking skin. According to Medical News Today, “Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and is the substance that holds the whole body together. It is found in the bones, muscles, skin and tendons, where it forms a scaffold to provide strength and structure.” The word collagen comes from the Greek word “Koll,” meaning glue.

Extensive studies have been done on retinol and out of all the anti-aging skincare products on the market today, retinol has the most scientific research supporting its use. It has proven to be an effective and safe treatment for various skin concerns. The most well-known use of retinol is for its anti-aging properties but it is also an important component of acne treatment because of its ability to unclog pores.

The original form of retinol developed over 40 years ago, called tretinoin (Brand name Retin-A), was known to be extremely irritating. New non-prescription formulations are considered safe and effective for long term use, even for sensitive skin. Treatment with retinol has been proven effective for improving the appearance of skin from sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, uneven pigmentation, melasma, acne, and rough texture.
